Dangers of Lead Paint

November 5, 2019

How Lead Paint Can Effect Your Health

If your home was built before 1978, your paint could contain lead. Lead paint only poses a threat if the paint is chipping, flaking, or sanded. Lead paint can also be found on old toys, in paint sets and art supplies, or pipes and faucets. If the pipes in your home contain lead paint, you could be consuming contaminated water. Studies show that over time, absorption of lead paint can lead to serious health effects, especially for developing children and pregnant women.

Continuous exposure and ingestion of lead paint can lead to lead poisoning. The main source of lead poisoning is through the digestion of lead paint, so children are more susceptible to lead poisoning because of their tendency to chew on miscellaneous objects. Lead poisoning can cause developmental delays in children since their brains are still developing. Signs of lead poisoning include behavioral issues, low grades, low IQ, growth delays,  and other learning disabilities. If your house was built before 1978 and your child is experiencing any of these issues, you may want to test your home for lead paint.

Lead poisoning can also cause abdominal pain, aggressive behavior, anemia, and memory loss. Pregnant women are also more at risk when it comes to lead poisoning because it can affect the growth and development of unborn children. In extreme cases, high doses of lead poisoning can lead to vomiting, muscle weakness, seizures, and even coma. If you experience any of these symptoms,  you must call 911 and seek emergency medical attention right away.
