While mining asbestos has ended in the United States, asbestos is still present in many older homes and buildings. Asbestos is a dangerous substance because it has the ability to break down into microscopically thin fibers. These fibers are too small to see, feel, or taste.
Asbestos can cause adverse reactions to those who are exposed to it. The most common way for asbestos fibers to enter the body is through breathing. Breathing asbestos can cause those tiny fibers to get stuck in the lungs and irritate the lung tissue. Once the asbestos fibers become trapped in the body, the body cannot break them down or remove them. The fibers remain in place and can cause disease. Some of the primary diseases caused by asbestos exposure include:
Asbestosis Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease where scar-like tissues form in the lungs. This fibrosis decreases the elasticity of the lungs, making breathing more difficult as oxygen and carbon dioxide are not able to pass in and out of scarred lungs easily. Asbestosis usually occurs in people who have had very high exposures over a long time, but years may pass before any symptoms appear.
Mesothelioma Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that most often occurs in the thin membrane lining of the lungs, chest, abdomen, and sometimes the heart. Each year in the United States roughly 200 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed. Signs of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos. People who work in asbestos mines, asbestos mills, or factories that use asbestos, as well as those who manufacture and install asbestos insulation, have an increased risk of mesothelioma.
Lung Cancer & Other Cancers Lung cancer causes the largest number of deaths related to asbestos exposure. Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that invades and blocks the lung’s air passages. If you smoke tobacco and have been exposed to asbestos, the chance of you developing lung cancer is greatly increased. The most common symptoms of lung cancer are coughing and a change in breathing. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, persistent chest pains, hoarseness, and anemia.
Evidence suggests that cancers in the esophagus, larynx, oral cavity, stomach, colon, and kidney may be caused by ingesting asbestos.
